Saskatchewan summer is all about wide-open skies, hidden gems, and prairie adventures. Whether you’re a lifelong local or planning a visit, these five prairie gems deserve a spot on your summer bucket list.
Located up north in Prince Albert National Park, where the air is crisp in the morning, the lakes are clear, and the forest is thick with evergreens. Wildlife sightings are common — from elk to foxes, and sometimes even black bears (at a safe distance). Waskesiu is perfect for hiking, kayaking, swimming, and taking a scenic boat tour. You can also go horseback riding (a favorite of ours!) or rent bikes to explore the trails with the whole family.
Regina’s iconic Wascana Park is home to a brand-new, super affordable waterpark that just opened this year. With multiple slides, splash zones, and shaded picnic spots by the lake, it’s a fantastic way to cool off on a hot prairie day. Daily and seasonal passes make it easy for families to come back again and again without breaking the budget.
Step aboard a heritage train and travel through authentic prairie grain country on this unforgettable adventure departing from Ogema. The volunteers and staff share local stories and history along the ride, giving you a deeper appreciation of Saskatchewan’s roots. The restored train cars and rural scenery make for a truly unique experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Located northeast of Saskatoon, Greenwater Lake Provincial Park offers cozy yurts for a unique glamping experience right by the water. The lake is great for swimming, fishing, or just enjoying a prairie sunset, and the park also features sandy beaches, hiking trails, and a welcoming campground atmosphere. The yurts are fully furnished, so you can pack light and still have a comfortable weekend getaway surrounded by forest and sparkling lake views.
With four locations across Saskatchewan — Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Yorkton, and Saskatoon — the WDMs are incredible places to dive into prairie history. One of our favorite features is the recreated old-time town, built to scale with authentic antique props that make you feel like you’ve stepped back to when Saskatchewan was first becoming a province. The WDMs are perfect for a rainy day, too, when you still want to explore and learn. Our prairie-themed souvenirs can be found in the gift shops at the Moose Jaw and Saskatoon WDM locations — a great way to take a piece of the prairie home with you.
From lakes and waterslides to heritage train rides, cozy yurts, and prairie museums, Saskatchewan offers incredible summer adventures waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re road-tripping for a day or planning a weekend away, these five spots will help you make the most of a prairie summer.
