Embracing the word "yes" has opened up new opportunities for me, taking me beyond the confines of my daily routine. Barb McGrath invited me to appear on her podcast. Without hesitation, I accepted! Her program focuses on marketing, pets, and local businesses, and explores the why behind the secret lives of entrepreneurs. It's available on both iTunes and Google Podcasts, but to make life easier you can here our conversation here:
This was my first time on a podcast and surprisingly it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. In fact, it was fun. I always enjoy a good conversation- what is better than talking to someone that is like-minded and so genuinely interested in what I’m talking about?
From there Barb and I continued to chat, which lead to ANOTHER 'YES'. Barb's show had been on Regina's local community radio CJTR for many years. With change in the air, she wanted to focus on something different which then opened up the door for me to do something different too.
You might be wondering how does one get to be on a radio show. As it turns out, the process is simpler than you might think. Most stations have their guidelines and requirements outlined on their website. All you have to do is submit a one-page proposal that highlights what you intend to bring to the show. This proposal went to a selection committee, who decide if it aligned with the station's interests. At CJTR, they are particularly interested in shows that explore the diverse perspectives and identities of our local people. Programs produced in languages other than English and French, creative approaches to audio production and broadcasting, and under-heard specialty music.
What I submitted for a proposal was an outline of my show - Get Chatty with Kathy - a talk show where people in our community can come on and talk about what's going on in their lives. So after I was given the thumbs up, I was given my time, 11am on Wednesdays. where I share informative and interesting stories about Saskatchewan. I love hearing about life lessons, business topics, and cultural experiences people are having in Regina.
Volunteering has allowed me to converse with individuals I might not otherwise have had the opportunity to speak with. It's a fantastic way to share my passion for learning about others in our community while engaging in enjoyable conversations. It blows my mind that someone actually gave me a radio show. All those years in school and work being told to be quiet, and now I have a microphone! This is a dream come true.
I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview some truly amazing individuals for the show. We've already met Regina's Acapella group, The 4Tunes, talked with a group of women about coffee and women's maternal health, enjoyed tea with 13th Aves Cuppa Tea's Jules, and even had a beer with Mark of Rebellion Brewery.
In the upcoming episodes, you'll discover the motivations behind many people's actions. Our conversations will be engaging, and I'm thrilled to share them with you. Like a fine wine, the show will continue to improve over time, so stay tuned!
