This past year I have been on a journey of change- specifically with my career evolving to self-employment. I have always wanted to do my own thing but never took the time to really dive in deep, perhaps one foot in and the other out.
I have muddled my way through this first year of business with some highs and lows. While understanding it is a process and it takes time. This summer a wonderful person recommended a book that hit home for me – it was called Traction by Gino Wickman. It is a play-by-play of how to build a business with a solid foundation.
Before reading this book, I had a business plan in my head… not on paper. I had a ton of ideas, and thoughts of what QCGifts.ca could be but nothing to share with a friend or colleague. In the first few chapters of Traction, it digs deep- asking about our Core Values, our Core Focus, where we will be in years two, and three, and so on. As I jotted down these key fundamentals and started to really own what this business was, it finally made me feel like QCGifts.ca was real. Like it was a thing.
I listed my goals, one being, building a network to get corporate orders. I had been thinking about this idea for almost a year, but I never said it with conviction. I never owned it. I certainly hadn’t written it down. But now it was there and I wanted it.
This past weekend was my first in-person event since reading Traction and understanding our core values and goals. I set up my booth, it had purpose and intent. It looked like it was a real business. As each person came into my little pop up, I said hello. I told them what this business was all about. And then the last thing I said to as many people as I could was-
“My goal is to build corporate accounts to do bulk orders,” that energy was out there!
And guess what? On Monday, two days after the fair- a notification on my phone- “Can I get 50 boxes by end of the week?”
So, do you believe in the power of suggestion? I think we all need to!

From heated hallways to home hibernation, from starting seedlings to layering up for the outdoors, we’ve found ways to make winter work for us. So next time someone asks if Saskatchewan winters are too cold, we can smile, knowing we’ve discovered a unique warmth that goes beyond the thermostat.
