Recently, I sat down with Mayor Sandra Masters of Regina for a candid conversation on my radio show, Get Chatty with Kathy on CJTR 91.3FM, Regina’s Community Radio. Our discussion provided a fascinating glimpse into the world of municipal governance and left me with several key insights that I'm excited to share.
One of the most significant takeaways from this experience was the importance of resilience. When I initially reached out to Mayor Masters about appearing on my show nearly a year ago, the timing wasn't right. However, I decided to follow up on my request almost a year later, and to my delight, she agreed! This experience reinforced the valuable lesson that perseverance often leads to positive outcomes, even if it requires patience.
As a mother of two children ages 8 and 10 the decisions that happen on a municipal level are very important to my family’s day to day life. Mayor Masters highlighted initiatives aimed at improving the city's livability, such as the creation of a winter city and the development of a new indoor water facility. These projects not only enhance the quality of life for residents but also reflect a commitment to building a vibrant and family-friendly community.
Throughout our conversation, it became clear that Mayor Masters is deeply dedicated to driving progress and positive change in Regina. Her optimism and enthusiasm for the city's future were palpable as she discussed the ongoing efforts of her team to move the city forward. She described a sense of momentum building within the community, noting, "You can feel it bubbling beneath the surface... I finally feel like everything's rolling in the right direction. The seeds are planted."
Mayor Masters discussed the importance of economic development and job creation in ensuring the long-term prosperity of Regina. She emphasized the need for strategic investments to drive economic growth and create opportunities for residents. Her dedication to progress, commitment to community well-being, and vision for the city's future are inspiring. I am hopeful that we might rejuvenate the feel from back in the Pat Fiacco “I love Regina” days. As we look ahead, let's draw inspiration from Mayor Masters' example and work together to build a brighter and more prosperous future for Regina.
My conversation with Mayor Sandra Masters provided valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges facing Regina. While there are certainly obstacles to overcome, Mayor Masters' unwavering dedication to progress and her vision for the city's future are inspiring. By working together and leveraging the strengths of our community, we can build a brighter and more prosperous future for Regina –one that reflects the values and aspirations of Regina.
With the upcoming municipal election, are you going to vote? Regina had a 21% voter turnout for our 2020 municipal election, slightly more than 2016. With the amount of influence the mayor has on our city, you would think more people would be showing up!
Each day I do my best to show up for our community and try shed some light on all the great things happening here. Find out more on my Instagram, and join the conversation.

As grey hairs and middle-aged acne decide to converge on my existence simultaneously, an unexpected curiosity about a topic not commonly covered in traditional education emerges—perimenopause. It's a term that occasionally floats in the air, yet its understanding remains somewhat elusive, igniting my curiosity even more. What exactly is perimenopause, and why does it matter?
In Canada, the average age for perimenopause is 45, signaling a younger onset than some might think. During this transitional period, hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in menstrual cycles, marking the beginning of a decline in fertility. Perimenopause typically lasts for about four years, although the duration can vary. In the last one or two years, estrogen levels drop significantly, and women may experience menopausal symptoms while still having a period.
Perimenopause, often overshadowed in educational settings, is the transitional phase leading up to menopause. It's a significant journey that many women navigate, and yet, the nuances of perimenopause aren't commonly addressed in our educational journeys, leaving a knowledge gap that deserves exploration.
Shifting the focus to Saskatchewan's healthcare system, one wonders about the initiatives and support structures in place for women navigating perimenopause. Examining the local healthcare landscape becomes crucial to ensuring that women have the necessary support networks in place.
Recent research highlighted in a Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) emphasizes that more women suffering from "debilitating" symptoms of menopause should be presented with the option of hormone therapy.
The paper reviews recent studies, suggesting that hormone therapy's risks are much lower for women in their 40s and 50s, especially if used for five years or less. The benefits of hormone therapy, which includes up to 90% effectiveness in treating hot flashes and improvements in sleep quality and mood disturbances, should be weighed against potential risks on an individual basis.
The paper aims to equip healthcare providers with the necessary information to engage in meaningful discussions with patients, ensuring informed decision-making. This insight underscores the importance of a personalized and informed approach to women's health during perimenopause.
Additionally, Hayley Millard will be joining me on my radio show, "Get Chatty with Kathy," on January 24. During the show, we'll delve into this interesting topic, discussing perimenopause and its various aspects. It promises to be an enlightening conversation, shedding light on a subject that deserves more attention and understanding.
On a more professional note, how can we, as a community, support women undergoing perimenopause? Considering the rich and diverse local market in Saskatchewan, exploring unique, locally sourced products that make thoughtful gifts becomes an opportunity to spoil that special woman during this phase.
Consider our Feel Good Box, items are from a bunch of great local businesses in Saskatchewan.

As the sun sets over the vast prairies of Saskatchewan, Derevo Designs emerges as a beacon of craftsmanship and passion. Sean's affinity for woodworking goes beyond the confines of a workshop; it's a love story with every grain of wood and each unique creation that finds a home.
Delving into their story, Sean and Lindsay's union marked not only the beginning of their life together but also ignited Sean's creative spark. The "card box" project for their wedding became a testament to his skills and a precursor to the artistic journey that awaited them.
The subsequent home projects showcased not only Sean's technical prowess but also his artistic vision. The bathroom renovation's built-in wall cabinet, an aesthetic delight, was just the beginning. The wall of cabinets in Sean's shop, surpassing the charm of many kitchens, became a canvas for his evolving craft. Through these projects, Sean discovered not only his love for woodworking but also the challenges that lay ahead.
Saskatoon's limited options for hardwood lumber didn't deter Sean; instead, it motivated him to seek out quality suppliers. The quest began with local wholesalers, ensuring a steady supply of top-notch Canadian hardwoods. However, Sean's aspirations extended beyond the domestic. He yearned for the richness of character found in burls, figured wood, and exotic woods from around the world. This led him to build relationships with suppliers who shared his passion.
The journey to source these unique materials is a saga in itself. Sean personally selects logs and burls from the sawyers who harvest them, creating a connection between the raw material and the final product. Burl from Australia, with its three-month voyage, adds an international flavor to Derevo Designs' creations, infusing each piece with a global touch.
The crafting process is a labor of love, with every crib board, cutting board, or playing card holder telling a story. The dedication that Sean and Lindsay pour into their creations is not just a job; it's a commitment to excellence. Each sale signifies more than a transaction; it's a vote of confidence in their artistry and a contribution to the ongoing evolution of Derevo Designs.
The continued growth of their business is a testament to the support they receive from patrons who appreciate the unique charm of their products. Every purchase becomes a catalyst for progress, enabling Sean and Lindsay to refine their craft year after year. The journey they've undertaken is not just about woodworking; it's about building a community of individuals who value the art of creation.
